The origins of Spoleto

Italy Spoleto (Italy)

Spoleto is an ancient city has been inhabited since prehistoric times. In the third century. a. C. came under the influence of the Romans who founded a colony called Spoletium. Already 100 years before Christ, Spoleto was called a beautiful city. Spoleto followed the Roman Empire even in its decay.
In 576, Faroaldo I chose it as the seat of the Lombard Duchy of Spoleto. At the end of the Carolingian Empire, the Duke Guido III and his son Lamberto were crowned emperor (890 and 892), Holy Roman Emperor by the Pope contention between Church and Empire, was destroyed by Frederick I Barbarossa, but in 1240 finally passed under the Church, that still did not prevent its establishment as a free commune. The city was enlarged and it was necessary to build a new city wall (1296) that surrounds it today. During the exile of the Popes in Avignon, the Cardinal Egidio Albornoz erected in 1359-70 the majestic Rocca Albornoz which became the seat of the papal governors, among others, for a certain period Lucrezia Borgia (1499).
In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the local noble families both renewed their palaces and religious buildings, often with the help of architects and artists of Rome, especially in the interior. During the French occupation, Spoleto was the seat of the Trasimeno, with the restoration it became the seat of the papal delegation. With the unification of Italy, Spoleto lost its dominant role in favor of Perugia, which was preferred as the capital of the region of Umbria.
